Why Your Pretty Website Still Isn’t Converting (and What to Do Instead)

by Ruth Slade | Jul 30, 2025 | Web Design, Websites

💥94% of websites never generate meaningful results. Is yours one of them?

Your website looks the part. It’s polished, professional, and on-brand. It ticks all the boxes with a slick design, mobile-friendly, and fast(ish) load time.

But despite the time, effort and budget?

Crickets.

No enquiries. No sales.

No return on investment.

If you’re nodding along, you’re not alone. Studies generally show that websites only convert between 2% – 5% of their visitors into clients or customers. This rate can vary significantly, however, within your industry. So, do look at industry specific reports for more accurate numbers.

But if you’ve been wondering, “Why isn’t my website working?” This article is for you.

Let’s break down what’s really going wrong. (Hint: it’s not your fonts.) And what to do instead of wasting money on another redesign.

Here’s why most “nice” websites still don’t convert:

  • Visitors can’t work out what you do or how you help
  • There’s no clear path to take action
  • Your CTAs (call to actions) are buried, vague or missing completely
  • Mobile experience or speed is killing engagement
  • It’s all about you, not your audience

Now let’s explore each of the above possibilities.

website conversion clear headings and messaging tips from she rocks digital hobart

1. Your messaging is muddled

❌ The issue:

Within 5 seconds, users need to know:

  • Who you help
  • What you offer
  • Why it matters

Most websites open with jargon, generic headlines like “We’re passionate about excellence”, or try to be too clever. The problem is. Clever rarely converts. Or my pet hate “welcome” or “hello.” What does that tell your website visitors other than you’re a lovely, welcoming person?

✅ The Fix:

Use a clear, benefit-led headline.

Make sure every line of copy answers: “What’s in it for your website visitor?”

2. There’s no clear journey

❌ The Issue:

A beautifully designed homepage that leads… nowhere. Visitors scroll, get confused, and bounce.

✅ The Fix:

Use a clear content hierarchy and flow. Every page should guide someone somewhere:

  • A service page
  • Booking form
  • Product
  • Lead magnet

Whatever makes sense. Use visual cues, anchor links, buttons and scroll prompts.

3. Weak or missing CTAs (call to actions)

❌ The Issue:

“Contact us” in the footer isn’t a call to action. Neither is “Learn more.”

✅ The Fix:

Give people a reason to act. Try:

  • “Book a free strategy call”
  • “Grab your copy of the guide”
  • “Start transforming your website today”

Repeat them too:

  • Above the fold
  • Mid-way
  • At the end of key sections

4. Mobile + load speed = silent conversion killers

❌ The Issue:

If your site takes more than 3 seconds or more to load, who’s hanging around for that? If buttons are too small or pages are too zoomed in. Again, who’s hanging around for that?

✅ The Fix:

Run your site through Google PageSpeed Insights

Check it on your own phone, tablet, laptop, etc and not just your desktop.

Fix layout shifts, oversized images, and bloated plugins. These are low-hanging fixes that directly impact conversions. And they’re pretty simple things for a general small business owner to be able to do, especially the oversized images, without having to get professional website developer help.

5. Your website talks about you (not them)

❌ The Issue:

“We’ve been in business since 2005…”

“We’re a team of passionate professionals…”

Yawn. Visitors want to know what’s in it for them.

✅ The Fix:

Flip every sentence around:

“We offer web design” → “We build websites that convert more leads and clients”

“We’ve worked with 200 clients” → “Join 200+ small businesses who’ve transformed their results online”

Make them the hero. You’re just the rockstar guide.

🎯Still thinking a redesign will fix it?

Here’s the trap:

Most people jump straight to redesigning. New template. New colours. New layout.

But unless you’re changing the messaging, strategy, content, and conversion paths, you’re just dressing up the same problem in a prettier outfit.

What actually works?

Transforming how your website functions. From the inside out.
