It should be easy to work out if your website is successful, shouldn’t it? If you’re generating new leads and sales regularly, you undoubtedly believe your website is performing well. But could it be performing better?

You may be getting sales through your website but missing out on many more potential opportunities, which no one wants, do they?

Website success is something I discuss regularly when talking to clients about redesigning their websites. If a website isn’t successful, now’s the time to find out why before you start redesigning things.

Our Steps for Planning a Successful Website

If you can read through and tick off these elements, you’re setting your small business website up for success. And if there’s some you can’t tick off, that’s ok. Just make a note of the ones you don’t, and we’ll talk about the next steps at the end.

1. Growth in leads and sales

Your website gets plenty of calls, emails, and sales. When you analyse your data, you see an upward trend month-on-month or compared to the previous year.
More leads and/or sales indicate that your website effectively engages your audience and leads them towards a purchase.

2. Regularly update content

Ensure that your website’s content is regularly updated. This could be done by adding blog posts weekly or monthly. Remember, it’s all about consistency.
You also set aside time once per quarter or half yearly, depending on how frequently you blog, to review the content on your website and ensure that it’s still relevant to your current business activities.

3. Fast-loading website

Your website loads in under 2-3 seconds. Ideally, it will load in one second or less.

A fast website is particularly engaging to visitors. They’re more likely to spend time on your website if they can access information quickly and efficiently. This means you have a low bounce rate, which Google likes.

You should test your website’s speed regularly to monitor performance levels. Pingdom is a great tool if you don’t already.

4. High level of traffic

You regularly attract visitors to your website through search engines, social media, and other marketing efforts. You should have an analytics tool (e.g., Google Analytics) to track the number of visitors.

When you compare the analytical data to previous years, you can see growth, giving you more opportunities to sell to potential customers.

5. Excellent reviews, testimonials and or case studies

Your business is receiving outstanding reviews from happy customers. And you’re sharing these reviews on your website, which adds essential trust factors that help potential customers make purchasing decisions.

For service-based businesses, you’re taking the time to create case studies for some of your larger or more exciting projects. (Note to self: Must do this)

6. Great user experience (UX)

Visitors to your website can quickly and easily find helpful information. Your website is easy to navigate and works successfully on screens of all sizes.

You don’t regularly receive complaints from potential customers who had a frustrating experience visiting your website. Your low bounce rate indicates that website visitors are finding what they want on your website.
